Story Dogs Changing Lives:
Meet Archie & Monty

The Buderim Lions are proud to sponsor two very special Story Dogs who are helping young readers grow in confidence and joy.

Archie, a white West Highland Terrier (or “Westy”) works with students at Buderim Mountain State School, and Monty, a golden Cavoodle, supports reading at Chancellor State School.

These four-legged reading companions are part of the Story Dogs program, where trained dogs sit with children while they read—creating a safe, relaxed space where reading becomes fun, not frightening.

A Round of A-PAWs, Please!

It has been truly heartwarming to see students light up each week when they read with their Story Dogs.

The impact of the Story Dogs program goes well beyond improved reading skills. One of the volunteers shared:

“I’ve noticed shy kids coming out of their shells. Neutral faces become smiles and giggles. Resistant readers become engaged and interested.”
The program builds not only literacy but also confidence, resilience, and self-belief. Students who once hesitated now walk into the reading nook with excitement—and leave beaming with pride.

The Power of “I Can!”

Over time, children’s storytelling improves and their “I-Can!” spirit begins to blossom. Whether it’s reading in silly voices to keep things lively or taking turns to finish full books together, the dogs (and their human handlers) make the experience enjoyable and pressure-free.

“There’s an opportunity to praise each child’s unique strengths, without fear of comparison or judgment from peers.”

Thanks to Buderim Lions

The Buderim Lions are honoured to support this life-changing initiative. Our sponsorship of Archie and Monty reflects our commitment to helping young people in our community thrive—academically, emotionally, and socially.

We’re proud to see how much difference one fluffy friend can make in the life of a child.

The Buderim Story Dogs were recognised by a Community Volunteers Award recently.
